Reflections from Decades in Psychotherapy
Observing Societal Trends through Clinical Practice
After spending many years as a psychotherapist, I have come to realize that the trends and patterns I have witnessed in my practice are closely linked to the broader evolution of our country. These developments—some positive, others less so—have accompanied me from the beginning of my career right up to the present day. It took some time and distance before I could clearly recognize these trends as a reflection of the larger society, almost as though my practice serves as a microcosm of our collective experience. What I have not seen is a reversal of these trends taking us back to “the good old days.”
Impact on Individuals and Relationships
These societal shifts not only shape the environment in which I work but also directly influence the lives of individuals, couples, and families with whom I engage. The patterns I have observed in therapy sessions illustrate how deeply societal changes can affect personal and interpersonal dynamics.
The country is more diverse than ever, with many cultures blending together. The impact on families and relationships can be profound as different beliefs, values, languages, and more challenge many. This challenge grows exponentially as a new generation arrives, locking people and traditions and roles together indefinitely.
Invitation for Reflection
Reflecting on these experiences, I am curious about your perspective. How do you perceive the influence of societal trends on your life and relationships, and what are your thoughts on the connections between the larger culture and the individual experiences we share?
